Nomenclature Session (Debate)
Organiser
An innovation for an IMC. The Nomenclature Session is being convened from 14.00 to 16.00 h on each of three consecutive days. Participants will express their views on proposals which may both alter names mycologists use, as well as modify the working practices of taxonomists. The focus will be formal proposals to change the rules relating to the naming of fungi which have previously been published in Taxon and Mycotaxon. However, other suggestions will be covered as time permits. Votes will be taken, and all IMC9 registrants who join the sessions will be entitled to a vote. In addition, all Congress participants will be encouraged to express their views via a questionnaire to be distributed at the Registration Desk. The opinions and proposals of the Session will be transmitted to the XVIII International Botanical Congress in Melbourne in 2011; the Rapporteur-général for that Congress, Professor John McNeill, plans to be present at the session.
There will be a main topic each day:
- Tuesday: The governance of fungal nomenclature;
- Wednesday: Mandatory pre-publication deposit of key nomenclatural information in a recognized repository as a requirement for valid publication; and
- Thursday: Moving to one name for one fungus.
Other formal proposals, and other topics mycologists wish to be debated, should be drawn to the attention of the Convenor (Professor David L Hawksworth CBE) before 30 June 2010; scheduling of those will be notified to delegates on arrival.
