Bioluminescent fungi: their biology and use as experimental tools
Organiser
Bioluminescent fungi are widespread, particularly in the tropics, however there is relatively little known about their biology and why they have evolved to glow in the dark. The session will introduce the biology of bioluminescent fungi, describe some techniques for cultivation and provide tips for imaging bioluminescence. Topics will include the use of bioluminescent fungi as experimental tools, e.g. as biosensors, a review on what is known about the mechanisms of bioluminescence in fungi and finally a discussion of the possible roles of bioluminescence in the ecosystem.
